Abstract

There are two objectives of this research. The first objective is to describe the kinds of gender biased elements that appear in English textbooks used in Junior High School; the second one is to describe in what kinds of context of situations those gender biased elements appear. Descriptive qualitative method is the method employed by the researcher in order to answer the objectives. Document is the method of collecting data done by writer in order to collect the intended data. The data of this research were taken from the compulsory English textbooks for junior high school student in Indonesia.The data analysis reveals that there are three kinds of gender biased elements, they are: women marginalization, women subordination, and stereotypical element. It also reveals that those kinds of gender biased elements appear in contexts of picture, sentence, letter, and conversation. Moreover, those gender biased elements also appear in Indonesian cultural context in which women are still assumed to be inferior to men.
