Abstract
This research aims at describing the teaching English method based on School Level-based Curriculum to the first year student in SMU Negeri 1 Sukoharjo in 2007/2008 academic year, and describing the problems faced by the teacher in teaching English. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method. The methods of collecting data are observation, interview, and documentation. The data are the information of teaching English language process at the first year students of SMU N 1 SUKOHARJO. The research was done on 24th November 2007 until 24th December 2007. The results of this study are as follows: (a) The goals of teaching English in SMA Negeri 1 Sukoharjo are to enable the students in understanding English as a means of communication and to enable the students to practice in using English in all skill forms. (b) Methods of teaching English applied by the teacher are Grammar Translation Method (GTM), Community Language Learning (CLL) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). (c) The teacher does not only use textbook as the material but also uses a worksheet to make the students understand the materials more. (d) In conducting the teaching-learning process, the teacher uses six steps, namely opening the class, explanation, consultation, practice, presentation, and closing. (e) The problems faced by the teacher in teaching English are classroom management, limited time, and different capability of the students.
