Abstract

This research paper studies: 1) the kinds of gender biased element appear in the coursebook of English for student of Senior high school. 2) the kinds context of situation do gender biased element appear. The objectives of this research are: 1) to describe the kinds of gender biased element appear in those English textbook. 2) to describe in what kinds of context of situations gender biased elements appear. This writer applies content analysis approach as the type of research. The data for this study are taken from “Linked to The WORLD 2” published by Yudhistira in Jakarta in 2006 by reading and observing the gender used in this English coursebook. The method of data collection is document which are in the form of conversation, sentence, pronoun and picture. To describe the kinds of gender, it used the theory of Gender, Language, and Society. To describe the context of situation, the writer user the theory of Gender Biased Elements. After analyzing the data, the researcher find that there are three kinds of gender-biased elements in the data source, they are: women subordination, stereotypical elements. The kinds of gender biased element appear in context of picture, sentence and conversation.
