Abstract

Migrant students are typically individuals who move from their hometowns to a new place to study and gain various experiences. Procrastination is considered a negative behavior because it involves delaying tasks, and in an educational context, this is referred to as academic procrastination when students intentionally postpone their work. The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between self-regulation and academic procrastination, the relationship between smartphone addiction and academic procrastination, and the combined effect of self-regulation and smartphone addiction on academic procrastination. The major hypothesis in this study is that self-regulation and smartphone addiction influence academic procrastination. The minor hypotheses in this study are that there is a significant negative relationship between self-regulation and academic procrastination and a significant positive relationship between smartphone addiction and academic procrastination. This research uses a quantitative correlational approach. The population in this study consists of migrant students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, with a sample size of 110 individuals. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling. Data collection methods include the use of self-regulation scales, smartphone addiction scales, and procrastination scales. The data analysis method used is correlation analysis. The results of the study indicate that there is a very significant effect of self-regulation and smartphone addiction on academic procrastination with an R-value of 0.378, an F-value of 7.024, and a p-value of 0.001 (<0.05). There is no significant effect of self-regulation on academic procrastination (p = 0.130; r = -0.144). However, there is a very significant positive effect of smartphone addiction on academic procrastination (p = 0.00; r = 0.328). The level of academic procrastination among migrant students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta is high, self-regulation is low, and smartphone addiction is high. The effective contribution is 14.3%, with smartphone addiction contributing 12.89% and self-regulation contributing 1.48%.
