Abstract

The northern squares of Surakarta, along with the keraton and the Great Mosque, formed an important landmark in the Mataram Islamic Sultanate's spatial architecture in the past, and are now a characteristic feature of the city. As an integral part of the overall spatial architecture, the northern square highlights unique characteristics and certain principles in its space arrangement. In the past, this area served as a meeting place for Sri Sunan with his people and was the site of royal ceremonies involving the community, giving sacred meaning. For a long time, the northern squares of Surakarta have attracted tourist attention, and this continues to this day, making it a popular tourist destination. In addition to being a popular destination for tourists, the northern squares retained their attractiveness thanks to their distinctive historical characteristics. The keraton buildings and the Great Mosque, with their religious and historical value, make the northern squares a historical and religious tourist destination. Religious tourism in Surakarta, which is now elected as an educational form of tourism, provides an opportunity to deepen the understanding of history and religion. By combining this unique and diverse tourist potential, Surakarta has become a destination that highlights local wisdom and an effective tourist experience. Therefore, research related to making the North Square Area as a religious tourism and cultural district center in Surakarta is relevant. This is because the city of Surakarta shows strong religious characteristics in the northern squares, and is not only limited to the religious tourist aspects, but also includes markets such as the Klewer and BTC markets that introduce the UMKM of the city. It is expected to boost tourist activity in the northern square area
