Abstract

Academic procrastination in students is often an obstacle. students sometimes often procrastinate to complete their assignments. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of time management and intensity of social media use on academic procrastination in college students. The major hypothesis in this study is that there is an influence between time management and the intensity of social media use on academic procrastination in students, the first minor hypothesis is that there is a negative influence between time management on student academic procrastination, and there is an influence between the intensity of social media use on academic procrastination in students. Subjects are students of the 2020-2021 batch of the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, doing academic procrastination (delaying doing assignments), actively using social media (duration of 3 hours). The population was 577 people and the minimum sample was 86 students with a sampling technique using purposive random sampling. This study uses a questionnaire method with an academic procrastination scale, time management scale and intensity of social media use. The data analysis method uses multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that there was an influence between time management and intensity of social media use on academic procrastination of students of the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, as evidenced by the significance value = 0.000 (p <0.01), F value = 39.420. This study also shows the results that there is a significant negative influence between time management on academic procrastination of students of the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta with a significance value of 0.000 (<0.01) and r = -0.681, and, there is no influence between the intensity of social media use on academic procrastination with a significance value = 0.078 (>0.01) and r = 0.151. The variable that provides the most effective contribution is time management at 45.9%. The categorization of academic procrastination and time management is moderate, and the categorization of the intensity of social media use is high.
