Abstract

Taman Nasional Gunung Merapi (TNGM) is a conservation area in the form of a national park in Indonesia with high biodiversity. Biodiversity in TNGM is threatened by several factors, namely volcanic activity, illegal hunting, environmental pollution, invasion of foreign species, climate change, and lack of public awareness of the importance of biodiversity. Efforts that can be made to prevent threats to biodiversity in TNGM include research, monitoring, and educating the public so that these threats can be avoided. The TNGM Center, tasked with managing the conservation area on Mount Merapi, has planned to build a research and education center that will be useful as an educational tourist spot by introducing biodiversity in TNGM. As an integration of the three objectives of the research center, the design of the Wildlife Research Station (WRS) is the right place for this integration. However, in realizing the WRS, there are important considerations to address: how to design a WRS that can withstand disaster mitigation efforts and sustain an ecosystem in TNGM, given that this conservation area is located on Mount Merapi, the most active volcano in Indonesia. Due to these problems, the design must answer these problems, including designing a WRS that supports research and conservation and is resistant to volcanic disasters which minimizes negative impacts on the environment. Design parameters based on these objectives include design suitability with research and preservation functions, structural resilience to disasters, disaster mitigation accessibility, and sustainability of building functions after a disaster. To minimize negative impacts, this design applies environmentally friendly technology and green architecture principles using Green Architecture principles based on Greenship Neighborhood 1.2.
