Abstract

Working mothers have multiple roles with bigger duties and responsibilities, some of them even have to undergo long distance marriages (LDM). This study aims to look at the description of happiness and describe the social support received by working mothers who undergo LDM. This research is a qualitative research using a phenomenological approach to 12 informants working mothers in Central Java who underwent LDM. Data collection was carried out by interviews and then analyzed using theme analysis techniques. The results of the study show that: (1) The description of happiness in working mothers who undergo LDM at first feel lonely, foreign to being away from their husbands, some of them feel used to this situation because at the beginning of their marriage they have committed to having LDM; (2) Situations that bring happiness to working mothers undergoing LDM, namely by spending time with children or telling stories with relatives or co-workers; (3) Social support comes from family, such as father, mother and siblings. However, some of them were also comfortable with social support from co-workers, friends, and neighbors; (4) Barriers experienced by working mothers undergoing LDM, namely communication that must be undertaken without face-to-face meetings, but through messaging or video calls. So working mothers who undergo LDM can experience happiness in their different ways. Based on the description above, it can be concluded that the description of the happiness of working mothers who undergo LDM has a different situation between at the beginning and at the end, at the beginning they feel strange about the LDM conditions, and at the end they feel they can undergo LDM even though there are LDM obstacles but because of the social support obtained, they can undergo LDM.
