Abstract
Depression is a psychological disorder characterized by poor emotional state, wrong thinking, and decreased physical activity. Previous research has shown that there are quite a lot of depression cases among social media users. This study aims to examine (1) the relationship between body image and depression in college students who use social media, (2) the contribution of body image to depression, 3) a comparison of depression in college students who use social media in terms of gender, 4) the level of body image and depression on students using social media. The population in this study were students at the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta and actively used social media. The sample in this study were 401 students taken through accidental sampling technique with data collection tools, namely the Beck Depression Inventory II scale and the body image scale. The results showed that (1) there was a significant negative correlation between depression and body image in students using social media, indicated by a value (rxy) of 0.401 with sig. (p) of 0.00 (p <0.01), (2) the contribution of body image to depression is R² = 0.122 (12.2%), (3) there is no difference in depression among students who use social media in terms of gender. analysis t-test 0.987 with sig. (p) 0.324 (p > 0.05), (4) student body image (1.2%) very low, (3.2%) low, (47.9%) moderate, (42.6%) high, (5.0%) is very high. While the level of depression (39.9%) was normal, (20.2%) mild, (21.7%) moderate, and (18.2%) severe.
