Abstract

This research aims at describing (1) the implementation of card sort in teaching reading comprehension, (2) the result of teaching reading comprehension by using card sort, and (3) the students’ responses on the implementation of teaching reading comprehension by using card sort. In achieving the objectives of the research, the writer uses card sort technique which includes four steps, namely planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research is held in SMP N 1 Sidoharjo, Wonogiri. The writer takes the seventh year that consists of 40 students as the subject of the study. There are eight meetings in this research, two meetings for conducting test and six meetings for the cycles in which every cycle is conducted in two meetings. The data of the study are the implementation of teaching reading comprehension. There are four method of collecting data such as: test, observation, interview, and document. After analyzing data, the writer describes (1) by implementing card sort in teaching reading comprehension, the students are able to categorize characteristic in genre text (descriptive and procedure text), (2) the result of the research which indicates that the average score of pre-test is 5, 98. In post-test, the average of score is 8, 12. The result of pre-test and post-test indicates that the students have a significant improvement in reading comprehension, (3) the students also have a positive response. They are not bored and more easily learning reading comprehension. The students look active and concentrate in the classroom during the lesson. Besides, they are also motivated in comprehending the text. The result of students’ response and the average score before treatment and after treatment indicates that the students have improvement in reading comprehension. Thus, it can be said that the teaching reading comprehension by using card sort is successful.
