Abstract

The elderly are a group that is prone to experiencing stress due to changes in themselves, namely a decrease in physiological and psychological functions so that the elderly tend to need social support from those closest to them. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between social support and the incidence of stress in the elderly with hypertension in Makamhaji Village, Kartasura District, Sukoharjo Regency. This research is a quantitative research, with the method used is descriptive correlative using a cross sectional approach. For the population, there are 177 elderly people with hypertension in Makamhaji Village, Kartasura District, Sukoharjo Regency. Based on the sample calculation, 123 elderly were obtained using random sampling technique. This study used a questionnaire instrument in data collection and the Spearman rank correlation test to analyze the data. The results of this study provide a correlation value of -0.265 with a significance value (p-value) of 0.003, so it is concluded that Ho is rejected, which means there is a relationship between social support and stress events in elderly hypertensive patients. Elderly who get good social support will have a positive impact on decreasing the level of stress experienced, and vice versa, the elderly with less social support will cause high stress events
