Abstract
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) or also known as Metal Inert Gas (MIG) is an electric arc welding that uses noble gases as protective electrodes and workpieces from atmospheric influences. The heat in the Gas Metal Arc Welding process is generated by the movement of electrons that occurs at the tip of the electrode and the surface of the workpiece. Stainless steel is a metal that has a high resistance to rust and is widely used in industries such as the chemical industry, the food industry and as parts for motor vehicles or as construction materials in the maritime sector. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the electric current of Gas Metal Arc Welding on the tensile strength and microstructure of stainless steel Welded Joint. The material of this research is ss 304 in the form of a welded plate with variations in electric currents of 80 Ampere, 90 Ampere and 100 Ampere then repaired then tensile testing and microstructure observations using a Scanning Electron Microscope machine. The results showed that the highest tensile strength was produced by an electric current specimen of 100 Ampere of 244.4372421 N⁄〖mm〗^2 , the second order was an electric current specimen of 90 Ampere with a tensile strength of 210.2050893 N⁄〖mm〗^2 and the last order was an electric current specimen of 80 Ampere with a tensile strength of 174.4804688 N⁄〖mm〗^2 which shows that the electric current affects the tensile strength of the material, the higher the electric current used, the higher the tensile strength. Based on the observation of the microstructure using the Scanning Electron Microscope machine, the smaller pearlite formed at high currents and the more dissolved carbon elements in ferrite caused the tensile strength to increase
