Abstract
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) or also known as Metal Active Gas (MAG) is an electric arc welding that uses CO2 gas as a protective electrode and work piece from atmospheric influences. Heat in the Gas Metal Arc Welding process is generated by the movement of electrons that occur at the tip of the electrode and the surface of the workpiece. Low carbon steel or SS 400 is a metal that has a carbon content of less than 0.3%. It has relatively low hardness, softness and high ductility. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of variations in the electric current of Gas Metal Arc Welding on the tensile strength and microstructure of SS 400 steel. The material for this research was plate-shaped SS 400 steel which was welded with variations of electric current of 80 Ampere, 90 Ampere and 100 Ampere then Tensile testing and microstructure observation were carried out using a Scanning Electron Microscope machine. The results showed that the highest tensile strength was produced by a 90 Ampere electric current specimen of 116,778 N/mm², the second order was an 80 Ampere electric current specimen with a tensile strength of 105,997 N/mm², and the last order was a 100 Ampere electric current specimen with a tensile strength of 37,543 N/mm². Based on microstructural observations using a Scanning Electron Microscope machine, ferrite is more dominant at 80 Ampere making it more ductile, while 90 and 100 Ampere electric currents are more dominant perlite so it is more brittle and defects were found at 100 Ampere electric current, namely the presence of porosity.
