Abstract

Poverty is a phenomenon that occurs in almost all developing countries. The issue of poverty spread on all platforms, especially in social media. The video uploaded by FoodieKim’s Facebook showed the children tied to a tree because their parents work on the field. The video less than 2 minutes invites social media users to express their sympathy and empathy expressions towards the video of poverty. The purposes of this research are to describe sympathy and empathy expressions and to describe the implicature of sympathy and empathy expressed by social media users to the video of poverty uploaded by FoodieKim’s Facebook. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The researcher used McDougall (2003) theory to describe the types of sympathy, Goleman (2000) theory to describe the types of empathy, and Grice (1976) theory to describe the implicature of sympathy and empathy expressions. The researcher found 61 data. The result showed: 1) There are 31 data of sympathy expressions consisted 19 data of passive sympathy and 12 data of active sympathy. 2) There are 20 data of empathy consisted of 11 data of cognitive empathy, 6 data of emotional empathy, and 3 data of compassionate empathy. 3) There are 10 data of implicature consisted 2 data of conventional implicature and 8 data of conversational implicature which divides into two types: 3 data of generalized conversational implicature and 5 data of particularized conversational implicature.
