Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of describing the exposure of popular culture to the resilience of local culture as well as describing the factors supporting and inhibiting the entry of popular culture. This type of research is a descriptive qualitative research. This research was conducted on people aged 18-25 years in the city of Surakarta. The research design uses case studies. Data collection techniques in this study were interviews, observations and documentation. The validity of the data using triangulation of data sources. The data analysis technique uses an interactive model consisting of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that: (1) popular culture is a growing trend, has the same form because it tends to be followed or copied, adapts based on conditions, has durability in the face of time, has profitability in terms of economic benefits. Popular culture has an impact on the resilience of local culture, therefore there is a need for a process of preserving local culture so that it does not fade or even disappear. (2) factors that support the inclusion of culture include the existence of citizenships who move abroad, the existence of cooperation between Indonesia and other countries, and factors of technological sophistication as a result of globalization. Then, the inhibiting factors for the entry of popular culture are low education, lack of respect for new cultures, feeling that foreign culture is bad, people who are still traditional highly respect local culture and the nature of people who are still closed to new things.
