Abstract
The study aimed (1) to identify the strategies to teach speaking in English extracurricular at SMP Muhammadiyah Plus Salatiga; (2) to describe the implementation of each strategy; and (3) to reveal students’ responses towards the use of teaching strategies in English extracurricular at SMP Muhammadiyah Plus Salatiga. A descriptive qualitative method was used in the study. Instruments used to obtain the data were observation and interview. After collecting the data, data were analyzed using the technique of analyzing data from Miles & Huberman. The results presented that strategies used to teach speaking in English extracurriculars were drilling, role-play, and discussion strategies. The drilling strategy was implemented by asking students to repeat pronouncing the expressions after being given example by the teacher correctly. The role-play strategy was applied by asking students to work in pairs. Then, they were asked to create a conversation and perform in front of the class. While the discussion was carried out by playing audio through the speaker and asking students to listen and complete the incomplete conversation. Then, students were allowed to discuss the answers. Students’ responses to the applied strategies to teach speaking in the English extracurricular were positive. To summarize, by applying those strategies in the teaching learning activities, the teacher succeeded in developing students’ speaking skills. This also proved that the goal of the “Kampung English” extracurricular activity at SMP Muhammadiyah Plus Salatiga is achieved.
