Abstract
One of the abilities in learning English that must be mastered by students is speaking. To master the skill, students can learn it through a process of communicating. Therefore, the interaction process is carried out during English learning. This study aims to explore the interaction patterns used by teachers and students in the speaking class at SMPN 1 COLOMADU, identifying problems faced by teachers when teaching in class talk, and the benefits of applying such interaction patterns. This is a qualitative research. The subjects of this study were grade VII students of SMPN 1 COLOMADU. The data of this study were collected using interviews, observations, and documentation. The researcher applied interactive techniques consisting of data reduction techniques, data display, and conclusion/verification techniques to analyze data. The analysis of interaction patterns was anchored from Sinclair’s theory of interaction. The results showed that the application of interaction patterns in the speaking class was very varied, but thus obstacles were still found during the learning process. These obstacles were the students' initiative in participating in learning, the lack of motivation, and the lack of self-confidence in students. The solution to the problems faced is to use more varied methods and media, apply more innovative patterns, and motivate students to be more responsive during learning.
