Abstract
This research was study about Depression and Its Implication to The Character's Personality Development in Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth (1904): A Humanistic Psychological Perspective. The objectives of this research were: 1) to describe the causes of depression of the main character in the House of Mirth novel. 2) to describe the consequence of depression on life changes in the main character. 3) to describe the reason of addressing depression in the House of Mirth novel. The research approach used descriptive qualitative research. The object of this study is the main character in the house of mirth novel. The data of this research is the depression in the main character in the house of mirth novel. The data source of this research is the house of mirth novel. The technique of collecting data in this research that will used by the researcher is documentation and to study the document the researcher uses content analysis. In this research, the researcher will use Miles and Huberman model of technique of collecting data. Activity in analyzing data, they are data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. In this research, the researcher will use data triangulation to check the validation of the data. Based on the finding of this research it can be concluded that the cause of depression of the main character in the house of mirth novel Lily Bart were poverty, disappointment, loneliness led to despair and lack of social support (Loss of Popularity). The consequence of depression on life changes in the main character, were from cheerful to sorrow, from open to closed and from optimistic to pessimistic. And also, the reason of addressing depression in the house of mirth based on Lily's life story, her life was full of tragedies. She tried to come out from the depression but it seemed that she had to face the failure during her life. She had failed to overcome her depression and chose to continue taking drugs until she died.
