Abstract
Nodular cast iron is gray cast iron with the addition of magnesium (Mg) or cerium (Ce) alloys to change the shape of the graphite flakes into round ones. This study aims to determine the effect of Shielded Metal Arc Welding on the microstructure and hardness of nodular cast iron. This research was conducted using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding method with a current of 75-90 V and the specimen was given a seam of 450 with 4 layers of workmanship. Hardness testing was carried out using the Vickers method, while metallographic testing was carried out using an optical microscope. The results of the metallographic test can be seen that the weld area produces graphite, ferrite and pearlite phases, then in the HAZ region is dominated by pearlite phase, while the base metal region consists of graphite, ferrite and pearlite phases. In the hardness test, the average hardness value in the weld area is 176.2 VHN. Then in the HAZ area the violence increased to 338.5 VHN. Meanwhile, the average hardness of the base metal is 303.7 VHN.
