Abstract

This research was carried out by the researcher during the COVID-19 pandemic, teacher and students were required the use of social media for learning using electronic devices. However, the use of electronic devices in schools was inadequate, thus resulting obstacles for teacher and students. Therefore, the researcher was interested in exploring how teacher and students can take advantages of social media in teaching English. The purposes of this research were to find out the various applications used by teacher, problems faced by teacher and students. This type of research was qualitative research. This research was implemented at SMPN 2 Kartasura. The research subjects were one English teacher and thirty-two seventh grade G students. This research used observation and interviews as data sources. The validity of the data used triangulation by comparing the results of observations with interview. The results of this research were found that the teacher used the Google Classroom, Youtube, and Whatsapp applications that were used during learning during the covid-19 period, there were also teacher problems, namely internet signals and student responses. Another findings were the students respond well to the use of social media. As a conclusion, the use of social media in the learning of SMPN 2 Kartasura students were been helped and the obstacles experienced were only minor obstacles.
