Abstract

This research is a study of Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games viewed from feminist perspective. The objectives of the research are to find out and explain the kinds of women’s independence by Katniss Everdeen as the main female character and to reveal the significant meaning of Katniss’s independence. This research is a qualitative study applying content analysis method. The object of this research is a novel entitled The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins in 2008 and the data are sentences related to Katniss’s independence found in the novel. The data analysis was conducted by classifying and categorizing the data to find the inferences. In order to gain reliability, the researcher read and reread the novel carefully and then recorded the data into a systematic framework based on the theory. The results of this indicate two points, the first point is kinds of Katniss’s independence which is represent into four categories: 1) women’s independence in society, 2) women’s independence in education, 3) women’s independence in work place, 4) women’s independence in economy. Second is the significant meanings of Katniss’s independence are woman can gain their independence, intelligent and courageous attitude. Katniss can win in The Hunger Games with Peeta melark because of her strategy. The analysis of Katniss’s independence intends to distinguish between analyses of feminist in literature study feminist analysis in other research fields.
