Abstract

This research aims to analyze the cognitive competency achievement of VIII grade students SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura in the subjects of straight line equations in terms of students learning styles. Cognitive competence is related to students thinking so it is very necessary that students can develop abilities that are rationally owned. In this research cognitive competency include remember (C1), understanding (C2), applying (C3), analyzing (C4), evaluating (C5), and creating (C6). This type of research is qualitative with a qualitative descriptive approach. The subjects in this research were six students of VIII D grade with different types of learning styles. The techniques of data collection used questionnaires, documentation, and interviews. The techniques of data analysis used data reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The result of research showed that the cognitive competency achievement by subjects with visual and auditory learning styles is C1 and C2. Achievement of competency is obtained because the subjects able to remember the gradient formula and able to describe what the gradient, how the symbols and solve the problem to find the gradient. Cognitive competency achievement by subject with kinesthetic learning styles is C1, C2, and C3. The subjects achieves these competence because able to solve the problems of daily life regarding line equations correctly. Subjects with visual and auditory learning styles have not achieved C3-C6 competence, while subjects with kinesthetic learning styles have not achieved C4-C6. Subjects not achieved C3 competence because not been able to find the equation for the price of apples. This is because the subject forget the formula used. Have not reached C4 competence because forgotten the formula so not been able to find the second gradient value. It is said not reached C5 competence because it not given the right decision regarding the results of the answers to the problem of the graph. It is said not reached C6 competence because it not been able to find the cutoff point to make the right graph.
