Abstract
The aim of this study is to describe the level of thinking in the geometry of students of 8th grade in order to solve the flat side of space area problems based on Van Hiele Theory. The type of this study is a qualitative research conducted in SMP Negeri 2 Baki on even semester in the academic year 2016/2017. The subject of this study is students of 8th grade of SMP Negeri 2 Baki. The technique collecting data was conducted by test, interview, and documentation. The technique of data analysis uses qualitative data analysis method. The results of this study showed (1) Students who have higher thinking skill has been able to know the indicators of each level, it means that students have reached the level of visualization, level of analysis and level of informal deduction; (2) Students with medium thinking skill are only able to know the indicators of the level of visualization and level of analysis, it means that students reach the level of visualization and level of analysis, but students have not been able to achieve the level of informal deduction. (3) Students with low thinking skill are only able to know the indicator of the level of visualization; it means that students are able to achieve the level of visualization. In the other hand, students have not been able to reach the level of analysis and the level of informal deduction.
