Abstract

This study aims to understand the process of intercultural communication adaptation undertaken by ethnic Malay students in establishing interactions with ethnic Javanese students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The background of this study is based on the importance of cross-cultural communication in creating harmony in the campus environment. This study uses a qualitative approach with exploratory descriptive methods, and data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that ethnic Malay students face various communication barriers, such as differences in speaking style, accent, and culture. To overcome these obstacles, most informants apply convergence strategies in the Communication Accommodation Theory, such as adjusting speaking style, using Javanese terms, and learning local cultural values. Meanwhile, divergence strategies are only used in informal contexts or when with fellow ethnic groups. This study concludes that adaptive communication strategies play an important role in building harmonious social relationships in a multicultural campus environment, as well as contributing to the development of cross-cultural programs in higher education institutions.
