Abstract
The rapid development of digital technology has increased the use of online games among children, thereby requiring maternal guidance to ensure that digital media use remains well directed. This study aims to analyze mothers’ media literacy in assisting children in the use of online games and to identify the forms of parental mediation and family communication patterns applied during the guidance process. This study employed a qualitative approach with a multiple case study design. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, with the criteria being mothers who have children aged 5 to 10 years who actively play online games. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification. The results show that mothers’ media literacy varies, ranging from a basic understanding of online game use to the ability to understand the benefits, risks, content, and interactions within the games. This study also identified three forms of mediation applied by mothers, namely active mediation, restrictive mediation, and co-using, which are related to communication patterns between mothers and children in the use of online games.
