Abstract

The increasing demand for Jumbo Bag production at PT Tri Usaha Sejahtera Pratama (PT TRUST) requires sewing operators to work under high production targets and strict quality standards, which may increase their mental workload. This study aims to measure the mental workload of sewing operators using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) method, identify its contributing factors through the Fishbone Diagram, and propose improvement recommendations. The study involved 20 sewing operators, and data were collected through observations, interviews, and NASA-TLX questionnaires. The results showed that the average Weighted Workload (WWL) score was 67.55, indicating a high level of mental workload. A total of 70% of the operators were classified as having a high mental workload, 20% as very high, and 10% as moderately high. Among the six NASA-TLX dimensions, Physical Demand contributed the most to mental workload (22%), followed by Effort (19%). The Fishbone Diagram analysis revealed that mental workload was mainly influenced by physical demands, repetitive work movements, production targets, quality requirements, and the need to maintain concentration. The proposed improvements include implementing micro-breaks, workplace stretching programs, providing anti-fatigue mats, developing visual Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), periodically evaluating production targets, and conducting operator training. These recommendations are expected to reduce mental workload while improving product quality and work productivity.
