Abstract

The development of Solo Baru in Grogol District, Sukoharjo Regency, as a residential, commercial, service, educational, and recreational area has increased the need for public spaces that can accommodate community social activities. However, this development has not been fully supported by the availability of comfortable, inclusive, and climate-responsive public spaces suitable for tropical conditions. This study aims to develop a public space design concept in Solo Baru using a biophilic architecture approach that integrates community activity needs with environmental quality. The methods employed include literature review, precedent studies, field observations, and data analysis covering site analysis, user activities, space requirements, massing, structural systems, materials, and sustainability strategies. The selected site is located in Dusun III, Langenharjo, Grogol District, Sukoharjo Regency, with an area of approximately 3.2 hectares. The design results indicate that the public space concept emphasizes green open spaces, integrated vegetation, water features, pedestrian pathways, and spaces for social and recreational activities. The application of biophilic architecture is realized through visual and non-visual connections with nature, the use of shade and aromatic vegetation, water elements, natural lighting, cross ventilation, and natural materials. The concept produces a functional and ecological public space that is responsive to the tropical climate while supporting social interaction within the community.
