Abstract

An adequate road network underpins community mobility, goods distribution, and regional economic growth. Flexible pavement is the most widely applied pavement type in Indonesia because it is easier and cheaper to construct, yet it is prone to premature failure under rising traffic loads. Adding lime as a filler is one approach used to improve the quality and durability of asphalt mixtures, since lime possesses an active pozzolanic character that may strengthen the bond between bitumen and aggregate. This study aims to examine the effect of lime addition on the Marshall characteristics, indirect tensile strength (ITS), and durability of asphalt mixtures through a systematic literature review. Articles were selected from accredited national and international journals published within the last five years using inclusion-exclusion criteria assisted by the Publish or Perish application, and the data were analysed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The review indicates that lime addition consistently increases Marshall stability (mean 1,747.86 kg, with all reviewed samples exceeding the minimum requirement of 800 kg), while flow values tend to decrease at higher lime contents due to increased mixture viscosity. Lime's bitumen-absorbing nature also controls air-void content (VIM) and increases voids filled with bitumen (VFB). Regarding durability, the mean Retained Strength Index reached 93.5% and the Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR) ranged between 85-92%, with 82.4% of the reviewed studies exceeding the minimum 90% durability threshold. Lime-modified AC-BC mixtures show higher average stability (1,933.83 kg) than AC-WC (1,629.86 kg), while HRS-WC and SMA mixtures achieve average durability above 94%. It is concluded that lime, whether in the form of hydrated lime, quicklime, or limestone, is an effective alternative active filler for improving the stability and durability of asphalt mixtures without compromising volumetric properties, making it a promising sustainable local material for road pavement construction in Indonesia.
