Abstract
The eastern part of Grobogan Regency experiences recurring and contradictory hydrological problems, namely flooding during the rainy season and drought during the dry season. This phenomenon is triggered by increased surface runoff due to the decreased ability of the soil to absorb water, inadequate drainage network capacity, and the absence of a comprehensively planned regional water storage system. High rainfall during the rainy season has not been utilized optimally as a water reserve, resulting in uneven water availability throughout the year. The design of this Water Conservation Area is aimed at producing architectural solutions that are responsive to climate dynamics through the Water Tunnel Architecture approach. This approach combines a retention pond as both a retention basin and a long-term reservoir with an underground water tunnel system that plays a role in regulating distribution and controlling flow rates. The retention pond functions to store rainwater to reduce peak flood discharge in a measured way, and to channel it back in a controlled manner during the dry season to maintain the continuity and stability of water flow. The design process is carried out through stages of hydrological data collection, peak discharge and storage capacity analysis, site condition studies, and the formulation of design concepts that synergize hydraulic technical aspects with public space quality. In addition to serving as water management infrastructure, this area is also designed as an Open Green Space (RTH) and an educational public space that supports water resource conservation, ecological quality improvement, and community social activities. The resulting design is expected to become a prototype of adaptive infrastructure to climate change that is integrated and sustainable in the East Grobogan area, while also contributing to the development of ecology-based architecture for more effective water resource management.
