Abstract

The Tanjung Market area in Jember Regency is a commercial center established in 1973 in the city center of Jember, bounded by Trunojoyo Street, Untung Suropati Street, Dr. Wahidin Street, and Samanhudi Street. The market has developed into a wholesale center for basic necessities, primarily trading regional food commodities and supplying rice, vegetables, fruits, and meat to retailers and nearby markets in Jember. However, the existing condition of the market presents several major problems, such as inefficient zoning, internal impacts on the surrounding area, and a lack of comfort, safety, and health-supporting elements for both traders and visitors. In addition, street vendors occupy the pedestrian paths around the site, obstructing pedestrian movement. This redesign applies a Layered Zoning System approach to create spatial order through zoning based on several aspects, in order to improve circulation efficiency and facilitate visitor activities without causing negative impacts on the surrounding environment. The methods used include direct observation of the Tanjung Market area, site analysis, analysis of activities and actors, and exploration of massing and circulation concepts based on a linear pattern responding to site conditions. This approach generates a building mass form that follows the site shape to optimize the use of the limited land area. Thus, the resulting design concept is expected to improve circulation efficiency, spatial organization, and user comfort, while creating better integration between formal and informal market activities.
