Abstract

The design of a mixed-use building in the form of an apartment with a mall podium in Surakarta City is motivated by the increasing need for vertical housing due to limited land and the growth of urban economic activities. The mixed-use concept was chosen as an integrative solution that combines residential and commercial functions in one area to improve the efficiency of space utilization and user mobility. A tropical architectural approach is applied to respond to hot and humid climate conditions through the processing of building orientation, natural ventilation, natural lighting, and the use of shading elements. The design method uses a descriptive-analytical approach with stages of site analysis, space requirements, massing, structural systems, and synthesis of design concepts. The design results in a building configuration with a podium system as a public commercial area and an apartment tower as a private residential area with separate but integrated circulation. The arrangement of the building mass is designed to be responsive to the direction of the sun and wind and is supported by green open spaces to improve the quality of the microclimate. The application of passive design strategies is expected to improve thermal comfort, energy efficiency, and create an integrated, functional, and sustainable residential environment in Surakarta City.
