Abstract
The development of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia demonstrates the need to improve the quality of education in line with the independence of economic institutions. The main problem faced is the limited management of productive business units, which makes Islamic boarding school operations still dependent on external funding sources. Therefore, an area design approach is needed that can integrate educational, residential, religious, and economic activities into a single, integrated and sustainable system. This design aims to formulate the concept of a modern, integrated Islamic boarding school area in Karanganyar Regency using a mixed-use development approach to support the economic independence of Islamic boarding schools. The methods used include literature studies, precedent studies, analysis of student activities, and site analysis encompassing the physical and non-physical aspects of the area. The design concept results in the integration of educational, residential, religious, and economic functions within a single area. The area's zoning is structured based on a hierarchy of public, semi-public, and private spaces, with the mosque as the center of the area's orientation. The massing is designed using a cluster and main axis approach to create spatial order and ease of orientation, and is supported by an efficient and segregated circulation system based on user type. Furthermore, the infrastructure concept is implemented through optimization of natural ventilation, natural lighting, and air and waste management. Thus, this design concept is expected to produce an integrated, productive, and sustainable Islamic boarding school area, while also supporting the economic independence of the Islamic boarding school as a community-based educational institution.
