Abstract

Bullying in educational environments remains a serious issue whose impact persists into higher education, particularly in influencing the social-relational dimensions of college students. This study aims to describe and understand in depth the friendship patterns among college students who are victims of bullying. Using a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study design, this research involved four female students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta with the initials FNS, AMS, DAWS, and QAH, selected through a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed qualitatively, with validity tested through source triangulation and member checking. The results of the study indicate that experiences of physical, verbal, and relational bullying fundamentally restructure the meaning of friendship to become far more selective. Students who are victims of bullying develop "trust-testing" mechanisms and restrict personal information as emotion-focused coping strategies to maintain emotional safety. The dominant friendship pattern is a selective one that prioritizes quality over quantity, where informants have many acquaintances but only a few close friends who are trusted and treated like family. A supportive campus environment and involvement in organizations serve as primary facilitators for social recovery, while high levels of alertness (hypervigilance) act as a barrier to initiating new relationships. This study implies the importance of rehabilitative policies in universities and the use of a strength-based approach for mental health practitioners in assisting students who are victims of bullying.
