Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between conformity on social media, particularly TikTok, and prosocial behavior among Generation Z. This study was motivated by the increasing use of social media among Generation Z, which not only has the potential to produce negative impacts but may also encourage the emergence of prosocial behavior influenced by conformity. The hypothesis of this study was that there is a positive relationship between conformity among social media users and prosocial behavior among Generation Z. The participants of this study were 106 active students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, aged 18–24 years, who were active TikTok users. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design and purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through Google Forms using two instruments, namely the Prosocial Behavior Scale and the modified Conformity Scale. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation test. The results of the hypothesis test showed a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.61 with a significance value of 0.018, indicating that conformity had a strong positive correlation with prosocial behavior. This finding indicates that the higher the level of individuals' conformity to trends and norms that develop on TikTok, the higher their tendency to exhibit prosocial behavior. These results suggest that conformity not only functions as a form of social pressure that encourages individuals to follow group norms but can also serve as a factor that promotes positive social behaviors, such as helping others, sharing useful information, providing emotional support, and participating in digital social activities.
