Abstract

UMKM SNS is a sack-sewing thread spinning business that still faces quality problems in the form of defective products, such as inappropriate thread color, damaged cones, untidy thread, unsuitable thread diameter, and thread that breaks easily. The high defect rate affects product quality and production process efficiency. This study aims to identify the dominant types of defects, determine the process capability level through the sigma value, and provide improvement recommendations to reduce the product defect rate. The method used in this study is Six Sigma with the DMAIC approach (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control). The define stage was carried out by identifying Critical to Quality (CTQ) attributes. The measure stage used DPMO and sigma level calculations, while the analyze stage used Pareto and fishbone diagrams to determine defect priorities and their root causes. The improve stage was carried out by developing improvement recommendations using the 5W+1H method, and the control stage was used to maintain the sustainability of improvements. The results showed that out of a total production of 10,046 units, 98 defective units were identified, with an average DPMO of 1,974.1 and a sigma level of 4.41. The most dominant type of defect was damaged cones, accounting for 27.6% of the total defects. The factors contributing to the defects were related to human, machine, method, material, and work environment aspects.
