Abstract
The “Indonesia Gelap” discourse emerged as public criticism of the gap between societal aspirations and government policy realities after the 2024 election. Research explaining how mainstream media construct this discourse through language and institutional practice, particularly in political opinion articles, remains limited. This study analyzes the textual construction and discursive practice of the “Indonesia Gelap” discourse in Kompas newspaper political opinion articles. The study uses a qualitative method with Norman Fairclough's Three Dimensional Model of Critical Discourse Analysis, limited to the text dimension and the discursive practice dimension. The primary data consist of 20 Kompas political opinion articles published between July 2023 and October 2025, analyzed together with contextual data and interviews with three informants representing the positions of production, oversight, and consumption of the discourse. The results show that at the textual level, the discourse is built through dark-light metaphors, critical-evaluative lexicon, high epistemic modality, and asymmetrical transitivity patterns between critical groups and the government. At the discursive practice level, Kompas positions itself as a critical-moderate mediator, selects opinion writers mainly from academics and independent observers, and distributes the discourse through various journalistic genres. These findings confirm that opinion articles are not merely individual viewpoints but institutional instruments that systematically frame the aspiration-reality gap. This study contributes methodologically to the application of Fairclough's Three Dimensional Model in the study of political opinion in contemporary Indonesian media.
