Abstract

The use of Portland cement as the main binder in mortar contributes significantly to carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, thus requiring a more environmentally friendly alternative material. One such alternative is geopolymer mortar, which utilizes fly ash as a binder with alkali activators in the form of Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Sodium Silicate (Na₂SiO₃). The characteristics of geopolymer mortar are influenced by its mix composition, therefore, mechanical and physical property testing is necessary to determine its performance as a replacement for conventional mortar. This research aims to analyze the effect of varying fly ash usage on the characteristics of geopolymer mortar based on compressive strength, density, and absorption values, as well as to compare it with conventional mortar. Testing was conducted on 28-day- old specimens with mix ratio variations of 1:3.5 and 1:4.25. The tested parameters include compressive strength, durability, density, and absorption as indicators of mortar quality. The results showed that conventional mortar has better characteristics compared to geopolymer mortar. The highest compressive strength value was obtained in conventional mortar with a 1:3.5 ratio at 2.78 MPa, whereas the geopolymer mortar at the same ratio reached 2.70 MPa. The highest density value was obtained in conventional mortar at the 1:3.5 ratio, measuring 2.78, and the lowest was in geopolymer mortar at the 1:4.25 ratio, measuring 1.65. Absorption testing indicated that geopolymer mortar had higher absorption values, specifically 8.18% for the 1:3.5 mix and 5.48% for the 1:4.25 mix, while conventional mortar measured 4.84% and 3.55%, respectively. Overall, conventional mortar exhibited higher density, lower absorption, and better compressive strength compared to geopolymer mortar.
