Abstract
This study aims to analyze the representation of emotions, the contribution of narrative techniques, and the moral lessons conveyed in the movie Inside Out. This research employs a qualitative research design with a narrative inquiry approach. The data were collected through observation, documentation, and note-taking by repeatedly watching the movie and identifying relevant dialogues, scenes, and narrative elements. The data were analyzed using Miles et al (2014) qualitative data analysis, consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The analysis of emotions was supported by Field’s theory, while Giannetti’s narrative theory was used to examine characterization, plot, setting, point of view, and theme. Lickona’s theory was applied to analyze moral knowing, moral feeling, and moral action. The findings show that Inside Out represents five dominant emotions: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger. These emotions are portrayed through the characters’ behaviors, dialogues, reactions, and experiences. The findings also demonstrate that characterization, plot, setting, point of view, and theme contribute significantly to representing Riley’s emotional experiences. Furthermore, the movie conveys moral values through caring, selflessness, responsibility, respect, honesty, empathy, compassion, and cooperation. Overall, the study concludes that emotions, narrative techniques, and moral lessons are closely interconnected in illustrating emotional acceptance, family support, and personal growth.
