Abstract

The muddy and low-bearing-capacity characteristics of paddy fields in Indonesia often cause four-wheel tractors to experience excessive wheel slip and reduced operational performance. This study aims to design and develop a modification of a paddy field plowing tractor from a four-wheel drive system into a crawler drive system in order to improve traction performance and mobility on muddy agricultural land. The research method consisted of design, fabrication, assembly, and field testing stages. The crawler system was composed of rubber tracks, sprockets, idlers, track rollers, tensioning devices, and an undercarriage frame specifically designed for the tractor. The analysis focused on traction capability, transmission efficiency, overall efficiency, fuel consumption, and operational performance after modification. The calculation results indicate that the crawler system increased traction efficiency on wet soil from 77.8% to 87.5% and improved overall efficiency from 32.4% to 62.7%. In addition, the specific fuel consumption (SFC) decreased from 727 g/kWh to 363 g/kWh. Field test results demonstrated that the modified tractor operated more stably, reduced wheel slip, improved mobility, and distributed load more evenly across the soil surface, thereby preventing the tractor from sinking into muddy terrain. Therefore, the modification from a four-wheel drive system to a crawler drive system proved effective in enhancing the performance and operational efficiency of paddy field plowing tractors under wet-field conditions.
