Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers a new alternative for generating G-code for CNC milling machines, supplementing traditional CAM software like FreeCAD. This study aims to compare the G-code generated by ChatGPT and FreeCAD for 3-axis CNC milling processes, evaluating them based on program structure, product dimensional accuracy, and machining quality. An experimental method was employed using 6061 aluminum, with identical machining parameters applied to both approaches. Evaluation involved analyzing the G-code structure, measuring workpiece dimensions, and testing the surface roughness of the machined parts. The results indicate that FreeCAD produces a more comprehensive G-code structure that aligns with CNC industry standards by incorporating safety blocks, work coordinate systems (G54), tool length compensation (G43), and absolute positioning (G90). FreeCAD generated 19,506 lines of code, whereas ChatGPT produced a more concise 965 lines by utilizing circular interpolation (G02 and G03). However, a discrepancy was identified in the ChatGPT-generated G-code: the absence of a finishing tool call, necessitating manual correction prior to use. Overall, FreeCAD proved superior in terms of program completeness, operational safety, and production readiness, while ChatGPT excelled in efficiency and program readability.
