Abstract
This study aims to understand how migrant students interpret and negotiate the practice of Deeptalk as a form of self-disclosure in friendships. Migrant students face various social and emotional challenges such as loneliness, homesickness, academic pressure, and the process of adapting to a new environment. In these conditions, Deeptalk becomes a space for interpersonal communication to obtain emotional support and a sense of being understood. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to explore the subjective experiences of migrant students in self-disclosure. The research informants were 10 Generation Z migrant students selected through a purposive sampling technique with the criteria of being migrant students from outside Java, having friends for at least one year, and having engaged in Deeptalk in friendships. Data collection techniques were carried out through semi-structured interviews. The results of the study indicate that Deeptalk is interpreted as an in-depth conversation about feelings, personal experiences, and problems that cannot be shared with everyone. Deeptalk plays a role in building emotional closeness, as well as a positive response from the interlocutor. This study also found obstacles such as being judged, concerns about negative responses, and time constraints. To overcome these obstacles, students carried out self-disclosure gradually and observed the response of the interlocutor first. This study shows that the practice of Deeptalk is an emotional and social negotiation process in the friendship relationships of migrant students.
