Abstract
Aluminum–silicon (Al–Si) Alloys are widely used in the manufacturing industry due to their low density, good castability, and high wear resistance. However, their mechanical properties can still be improved through Heat Treatment processes. This study aims to analyze the effect of water and 20% calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) solution as Quenching media on the crystal structure and Hardness of Al–Si Alloys after Quenching and Artificial Aging treatments. The research was conducted using Al–Si Alloy specimens whose chemical composition was first characterized by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). The specimens were then subjected to Solution Treatment at 580°C, followed by Quenching in water and a 20% CaCO₃ solution. Some specimens were subsequently subjected to Artificial Aging at 200°C. Crystal structure characterization was performed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), while mechanical properties were evaluated using the Micro Vickers Hardness test with a load of 100 kgf. The XRD results showed that all specimens were dominated by two main phases, namely Aluminum (Al) and Silicon (Si). The Quenching and Artificial Aging treatments did not produce new phases; however, they affected the diffraction peak intensity, Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM), and crystallite size. The Hardness test results indicated that the Raw Material had a Hardness value of 88.84 HV, which increased to 94.02 HV after water Quenching and to 89.72 HV after Quenching in a 20% CaCO₃ solution. The highest Hardness value was obtained from the specimen subjected to Quenching in a 20% CaCO₃ solution followed by Artificial Aging, reaching 112.88 HV, representing an increase of 27.05% compared to the Raw Material. The results demonstrate that the combination of 20% CaCO₃ Quenching and Artificial Aging is the most effective treatment for improving the Hardness of Al–Si Alloys.
