Abstract
The use of recycled coarse aggregates, such as waste from demolished brick walls, has increasingly been applied to reduce the exploitation of natural resources and support sustainable construction. However, the substitution of conventional materials with waste materials often results in a reduction in the compressive strength of concrete, requiring material reinforcement. This study aims to analyze the effect of polypropylene fiber (SikaFiber PPM-12) substitution on concrete containing coarse aggregate partially replaced with waste from demolished brick walls. The mix design was prepared based on SNI 7656:2012 with a target compressive strength of 25 MPa. SikaFiber was added at dosages of 0.5 kg/m³ and 0.7 kg/m³, combined with the superplasticizer Sika ViscoCrete 3115 N. The specimens were cured by water immersion for 28 days and subsequently evaluated through compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength tests. The test results showed that the use of 30% brick demolition waste without additives relatively reduced the strength of the concrete. With the addition of SikaFiber combined with superplasticizer at a dosage of 0.5 kg/m³, the concrete strength and workability began to increase. Increasing the SikaFiber dosage to 0.7 kg/m³ resulted in further improvements in both concrete strength and workability. Therefore, SikaFiber can improve the strength of concrete containing 30% coarse aggregate replacement with brick demolition waste and compensate for the strength reduction caused by the use of recycled waste aggregate. However, the alkali-silica reactivity test, which evaluated the reactivity of the brick demolition waste aggregate to alkali-silica reaction, showed that two of the three specimens were classified as reactive because their expansion values exceeded the reactive limit at 14 days. Therefore, coarse aggregate derived from brick demolition waste tends to be reactive and is not recommended for use without further treatment or consideration.
