Abstract

Music serves as a medium of popular culture that actively constructs and represents gender values, particularly masculinity. However, studies on the representation of subordinate masculinity in Indonesian-language song lyrics, especially those employing Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis, remain limited. This study analyzes how subordinate masculinity is constructed through word choice in the lyrics of Hafalan Luar Kepala by Harum Manis. Using a descriptive qualitative method within a critical paradigm, the study applies Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis, supported by Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, to the song’s complete lyrics. The findings reveal two forms of representation: first, the negotiation of hegemonic masculinity through residual or internalized hegemonic traits reflected in the male figure’s attempt to conceal his emotional distress; and second, the construction of subordinate masculinity through a male figure who is non-dominant, vulnerable, and subject to the female figure’s control. These findings show that music actively constructs and represents non-hegemonic masculinity, confirming that gender representation in music is dynamic rather than singular or absolute.
