Abstract
Indonesia has abundant water resources that can be utilized as a source of renewable energy through a Pico Hydropower Plant (PHP). This study aims to design and analyze the performance of a Pico Hydropower Plant (PHP) using an Archimedes Screw turbine that utilizes irrigation canal flow as a renewable energy source. The proposed system consists of an Archimedes Screw turbine, a pulley transmission system, a DC generator, a Solar Charge Controller (SCC), a 12 V battery, an inverter, and AC loads. The system was installed in an irrigation canal with an average water discharge of approximately 0.05 m³/s and a head of 0.5 m. Performance testing was conducted over a 24-hour period to evaluate the effects of water discharge on turbine speed, generator speed, torque, and electrical power output. The results showed that the average water discharge during the daytime was 0.0498 m³/s, producing an average generator speed of 411.68 RPM and a torque of 1.279 Nm, while the nighttime average water discharge was 0.0507 m³/s, with an average generator speed of 410.22 RPM and a torque of 1.271 Nm. Under load conditions, the generator produced an average electrical power of 12.07 W during the daytime and 10.71 W at night. The average load power consumption was 34.22 W and 35.50 W, respectively. The battery functioned as both an energy storage device and an auxiliary power source to ensure continuous electricity supply when the generator output was insufficient to fully meet the load demand. Overall, the designed PHP system operated stably and was capable of generating electrical energy continuously from the irrigation canal. However, the inverter efficiency, which remained in the range of 67,68–72,12%, resulted in significant power losses. Therefore, further optimization of the power conversion system is required to improve overall system performance and maximize the utilization of the generated electrical energy.
