Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication identity construction of members of the Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate (PSHT) Weru Branch, Sukoharjo amidst the ambivalence between the organization's internal values that emphasize brotherhood and noble character and public perception that is often influenced by the actions of individuals and media framing. The study uses a qualitative approach with thematic analysis methods on data obtained through in-depth interviews and participant observation. The theoretical framework used is the Communication Theory of Identity which views identity as a layered construction that includes personal, enacted, relational, and communal identity. The results show that members' communication identities are dynamically formed through interactions between these layers of identity, where the organization's moral values are internalized at the personal level, manifested in communication practices at the enacted level, strengthened through interpersonal relationships at the relational level, 6 and constructed as collective consciousness at the communal level. In addition, identity gaps were found, especially between enacted and communal identities in the public sphere, which encourage members to engage in continuous identity negotiation. This research confirms that communication identity is contextual and continues to develop along with the dynamics of social interaction, and contributes to the development of identity communication studies in the context of organizations based on local cultural values.
