Abstract

College students in the transition phase toward emerging adulthood often encounter issues regarding their meaning in life, such as not knowing their life purpose or merely going through life without specific goals to achieve. This condition indicates that college students are vulnerable to experiencing a lack of meaning in their lives. Consequently, when students fail to comprehend their meaning in life, it can lead to confusion, anxiety, and a diminished enthusiasm for a better life. Factors influencing the meaning in life include self-esteem and religiosity as internal factors within the students themselves. The objectives of this study are to determine the simultaneous relationship between self esteem and religiosity toward the meaning in life, to examine the relationship between self-esteem and the meaning in life, and to evaluate the relationship between religiosity and the meaning in life. The method employed in this study is a quantitative correlational design utilizing research questionnaires, which consist of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS), and the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ). The population of this study comprises active undergraduate students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Utilizing a purposive sampling technique, a minimum sample of 150 respondents was obtained (with final data collected from 160 respondents). Data analysis was performed using multiple linear regression. The results of the study demonstrated an value of F= 6.49 with a significance level of 0.002, indicating a significant relationship between self-esteem and religiosity simultaneously toward the meaning in life. The N value of 0.08 indicates that the self esteem and religiosity variables contribute 8% to the meaning in life variable. Furthermore, self-esteem has a significant positive relationship toward the meaning in life (t = 3.40), whereas religiosity has a non-significant negative relationship toward the meaning in life (t = -1.50).
