Abstract
This study aims to uncover the representation of gender-based violence in Women from Rote Island through Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. The background of this research is based on the high cases of gender-based violence, especially against women, and the role of film as a medium that is able to shape and represent social reality. This study uses a qualitative approach of content analysis with a critical paradigm. The data collection technique is carried out through observation and documentation of each scene in the film, then analyzed using Roland Barthes' concepts, namely denotation, connotation, and myth. This study uses Stuart Hall's representation theory and gender-based violence theory where the results of the study show that there are 11 scenes that represent gender-based violence which are divided into three main categories, namely physical violence, sexual violence, and psychological/emotional. This research contributes to enriching the study of communication science, especially in the study of representation and semiotics, and confirms that the media has an active role in constructing social meaning. In addition, this research is expected to encourage the formation of a more critical understanding of gender-based violence in the media.
