Abstract

This study aims to determine the antarpribadi communication patterns between parents and children in building tolerance in interfaith families. The background of this study is based on the increasing cases of religious differences in families and the still limited studies that focus on communication within the nuclear family as an important factor in forming tolerance. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation of a family consisting of five members with different religious backgrounds. Analysis was conducted using Family Communication Patterns Theory (FCPT). The results show that communication within the family takes place openly, relaxed, and two-way, and provides space for children to express their opinions. The communication patterns formed tend to have a high conversation orientation and a low but still significant conformity orientation. In addition, tolerance is built through instilling the values of mutual respect, openness, and direct practice in daily life. Tolerance is not only understood conceptually, but also manifested in real interactions between family members, thereby building tolerance and maintaining harmony and strengthening relationships in interfaith families.
