Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of binge-watching or marathon viewing among Generation Z, which has now become a dominant media consumption pattern with the rapid development of on-demand streaming services. The main focus of this study is to understand how Gen-Z interprets binge-watching behavior not merely as entertainment, but as a coping mechanism (avoidance coping) to escape the pressures of reality. This qualitative research integrates Alfred Schutz's phenomenological method and the Uses and Gratifications perspective to explore subjective motives and fulfillment of gratification needs from student informants who are active users of streaming platforms. The results show that Gen-Z's media consumption patterns are driven by two main motives: the because-motive rooted in academic pressure, social anxiety, and procrastination, and the in-order-to-motive aimed at achieving emotional regulation, the creation of a controlled "parallel world," and mental recharge. Theoretically, this study enriches communication science studies on the evolution of active audiences in the digital era, while practically, these findings contribute to mapping media consumption behavior as an instrument of mental health in the social environment
